Make your website feel like YOU—even if you’re not a tech wizard.

One of the things I love most about Squarespace is how beautifully designed the templates are right out of the box. But let’s be honest, no one wants their website to look like it came straight off the rack. You want it to feel personal, professional, and uniquely yours.

The good news? You don’t need to touch a single line of code to make that happen.

Whether you’re a small business owner, creative freelancer, or passionate side hustler, here’s how you can customize a Squarespace template to match your brand—without ever writing a line of code.

1. Use the Style Editor to Customize Fonts, Colors, and Spacing

Head to Design > Site Styles to unlock Squarespace’s visual editor. Here, you can:

  • Change your fonts — Pick a typeface that reflects your brand’s vibe: clean and modern? Warm and playful? Elegant and classic?
  • Set your color palette — Choose brand colors that carry across buttons, links, backgrounds, and headings.
  • Adjust spacing — Control padding, margins, line height, and more for that “just right” feel.

Pro tip: Keep it consistent—limit yourself to 2-3 fonts and 3-5 brand colors.

2. Replace Stock Images with Your Own (or Use High-Quality Free Alternatives)

Squarespace templates often include gorgeous placeholder images, but they’re not yours. Swap them out with:

  • Your own photography (even smartphone photos can work if well lit!)
  • Free resources like Pexels or Unsplash
  • Brand-specific visuals—your office, your products, or even textures that match your style

3. Mix and Match Layout Blocks

Every Squarespace page is built from content blocks you can drag and drop:

  • Text blocks
  • Image blocks
  • Buttons
  • Forms
  • Videos
  • Galleries

Try combining these in new ways—like a text block beside an image, or a three-column testimonial layout. You’re not limited to the default design.

Think of it like playing with Legos: the structure is flexible, and you’re the builder.

4. Use Section Backgrounds and Custom Layouts

Add visual variety by setting different backgrounds for each section:

  • Light and dark sections alternating down the page
  • A full-bleed image or texture for visual pop
  • Solid brand color blocks to break up the scroll

Click “Edit” on any page, hover between sections, and choose “+ Add Section” to explore pre-designed layout options (great for services, features, or testimonials).

5. Preview on Mobile

Squarespace templates are responsive—but your edits might shift things around. Before you hit “publish,” click the mobile preview to make sure everything still looks clean and readable on smaller screens.

Final Thought: You Don’t Have to Be a Designer to Have a Beautiful Website

Squarespace does a lot of the heavy lifting for you. But even with the most beautiful template, the magic happens when you make it yours.
